Illustrious classical composers such as Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky have previously been inspired by Jazz. Galán will discuss her research during her lecture-recital Classics Meet Jazz. She talks about it and she is assisted during performances by a rhythm section for which she wrote arrangements.

PETER DE GROTE FESTIVAL

During her piano studies at the Prince Claus Conservatoire Beatriz Galán specialized herself in studying Jazz influences in classical music. Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy were influenced by the concert of Paul Whiteman's orchestra, and Stravinsky and others followed. Beatriz has build a large repertoire with surprising classical pieces which all have a link with the Jazz music from the early 20th century. She will demonstrate the connection between these music styles during this lecture recital.

George Crumb’s “Eine Kleine Mitternachtmusik” was a richly reverberated and sound-effected musing on Monk’s theme. This truly fantastic Crumb was followed by, among others pieces, a Lisztian Gershwin arrangement by pianist Earl Wild and Jazzy music from German, Cuban, Turkish and Russian spheres.
